11/9/2009 - Golden Eagles Split Weekend With RMU-Peoria.

The Golden Eagles split their games vs. Robert Morris University - Peoria this past weekend. Friday's game was a tough 5-3 loss. Down 3-1 going into the second period the Golden Eagle's Tony Jazdzyk scored a quick goal on the second shift of the period which swayed the momentum to the Eagles. With constant control in the RMU zone, the Golden Eagles struck again with a shot from leading goal scorer Marty Wilkins. To cap of the period Ken Javor also scored leaving the game tied going into the third. In the third a power play goal from early from RMU proved to be the dagger. The Eagles pulled goalie Steve Dreher late in the game but RMU scored a quick open net goal. Overall penalty trouble and failure to stop RMU's leading line proved to be too much in the 5-3 loss.

Saturday's game for the Golden Eagles was a whole different story. The Golden Eagles came well rested and eager for a win. After some "interesting" play from RMU leading to a mass of penalties and DQ's the Golden Eagles were able to get back into the game and took control. Lines led by Marty Wilkins and Ken Javor once again put a hefty 7 points on the scoreboard. Sophomore goalie R.J. Bennett also left the Golden Eagles with nothing to worry about with a near flawless performance only letting in 1 goal. Winning 7-1, the Golden Eagles hope to carry their momentum and caliber of play into this weekends games vs. McKendree University.

10/20/2009 - Golden Eagles Gain Momemtum vs. Northwestern

The Golden Eagles won Friday's game and tied on Saturday vs. Northwestern University. The Golden Eagles came ready to play on Friday night and were in control the whole game. Coming off a great game vs. Illinois State University the Golden Eagles started Freshman goalie Steve Dreher. Dreher kept the Golden Eagles in the game and helped the Golden Eagles to a 4-1 victory. Aside from Dreher's play, another key to the win was only taking 5 penalties, 2 of which were offsetting.

On Saturday's game this was not the case. The Golden Eagles took 14 penalties and as a result were shorthanded for a good portion of the game. The Golden Eagles were up 3-1 in the third, but were set back due to calls of a questionable nature. Northwestern scored 2 quick power play goals and tied the game. Late in the third the Golden Eagles were on the attack and were dominating the game. With 1 minute left another penalty was called and the team killed the final minute of the game to force overtime. After 5 minutes of overtime the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

9/20/2009 - Golden Eagles Split Weekend with NIU

The Golden Eagles split their games this weekend against Northern Illinois University. The Eagles had their home opener on Friday and were ready to play after 4 days on the ice the past week with tryouts and practice. With the team selected, 10 new players made their way on to the ice for the first time. The Golden Eagles struggled in the first and second periods with penalties but the team was able to come back in the third period with a boost of momentum from their veteran line made up of Marty Wilkins, Dan Boylan, and Nick Romans. The line put up impressive numbers scoring 6 of the 7 goals in the 7-4 victory for the Golden Eagles.

On Saturday the Golden Eagles also started out slow looking at a 6-0 deficit going into the second period. The golden eagles had their work cut out for them but leadership from the upperclassmen Marty Wilkins and Dan Boylan and spark from freshman Will Jurgenson led the eagles to an unanswered 6 goal comeback in the second period. Jurgenson had the teams first hat trick of the season and proved to be a great asset in the second period comeback. The third period was an exciting period with the golden eagles taking the lead 8-7 with under 2 minutes left in the game. The Golden Eagles looked to be on their way to taking both games on the weekend but a late penalty led to NIU power play goal. In overtime the Eagles were called with another penalty and on the ensuing power play NIU scored ending the game.

The team is excited at the outcome of the weekend and look forward to a promising season. With a solid veteran lineup and a talented group of incoming players the eagles have another great team.
